There is a significant potential for energy storage on the grid: storing energy during times of low demand to supply customers during peak load times without the need for additional generation capacity. Energy storage capacity makes renewable energy, whose power output cannot be controlled by grid operators, smooth and dispatchable. Storage technologies can stabilize the grid, enable micro-grids, and provide reliable backup for critical facilities such as hospitals or data centers.

In the US several states have announced storage plans requiring utilities to buy energy storage capacity. Our 2015 conference included a special session on these initiatives. The 2016 event will include a special session on international development in energy storage with keynote speakers from around the world.

Battery development for off-grid applications – for portable electronics and electric vehicles – also remains an area of strong industry pull. The corporate and investment world recognizes the considerable potential for innovations that increase energy density and bring down costs, whilst maintaining safety.

Energy storage continues to be an area of strong investment community interest.

You are invited to submit abstracts describing new materials and device development, and also describing the path to commercialization of novel energy storage systems.
