Remanufacturing: An Innovative Closed Loop Life-Cycle Solution that Significantly Reduces Obsolescence Risk and TLCM Costs

S. Thevanayagam
Parts Life, Inc., US

Keywords: innovative, lifecycle sustainment, closed-loop remanufacturing system

Summary:

The benefits of a closed-loop remanufacturing solution include significant cost and time savings and the ability to produce high quality parts in low quantities or even single items. In addition to a direct cost savings of more than 30%, an increase in availability for the major systems dependent on the parts would be realized, improving warfighting capabilities and enabling further savings through reduced downtime. Another benefit is a decrease in waste disposal of approximately 1 million tons. Additionally, the closed-loop remanufacturing system reduces the potential counterfeiting risk - the reduction in waste and disposal of failing parts decreases the likelihood of technical knowledge being disseminated beyond the government and suppliers.
