Summary:We precipitated spatially selective Eu/Yb doped CaF2 nanocrystals on the surface of glass by CO2 laser irradiation. Because of low phonon energy of CaF2, we observed several times enhancements in down-shift emission under 365 nm excitation and upconversion emission under 980 nm excitation. Our approach to produce glass-ceramics does not require an electric furnace for thermal diffusion of composite materials in glass. It needs only a few minutes instead of several hours to precipitate nanocrystals in this study. We controlled CO2 laser power Glass-ceramics was characterized by using micro-X-ray diffraction (-XRD), and the mean crystal size was ~10 nm. Confocal fluorescence microscope analysis revealed the depth of spatially distributed volume of nanocrystals near the surface.
