Summary:Hydrogen as fuel for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) has very high energy content per mass comparing to commonly used fuels, although its energy density is significantly lower. This makes it challenging to store hydrogen on board FCEV. Cost of storing hydrogen on board adds another challenge for FCEV competitiveness. This presentation provides an overview of the Fuel Cell Technologies Office’s (FCTO) R&D portfolio supporting development of advanced hydrogen storage technologies. It will address DOE’s hydrogen storage targets, current status of the technologies, and challenges to achieve those targets and beyond, for near and long-term approaches. Some project highlights and recent progress for on-board physical and material-based storage technologies for hydrogen will be discussed.
