Manish Chhowalla is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, and former Director of the Institute for Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology at Rutgers University. From June 2009 – July 2010, he was a Professor in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. Before joining Rutgers University in 2002 as an Assistant Professor, Professor Chhowalla was a Royal Academy of Engineering Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge after completing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering there. Prior to his PhD, he worked for Multi-Arc Inc. (now Ion Bond) where he developed one of the first applications of “amorphous diamond” thin films.
He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS), of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and of the Institute of Physics. He is currently an Editor at ACS Nano and was the founding Editor in Chief of Applied Materials Today. His current interests are in the fundamental studies of 2D materials.
