Summary:

Acoustic Emission has been shown to be useful in detecting damage in situ. This work aims to use a Laser Doppler Vibrometer in place of traditional PZT sensors to eliminate the sensor effect on the recorded signal. The use of a laser allows for non-contact AE measurements at the same time as Resonance Frequency Tracking using a Single Laser Sensor. A summary of initial results in the development of this system for in situ damage detection of materials subjected to vibration fatigue is provided.
