Summary:

Carbon nitride microspheres with carbon doping synthesized via one-step solvothermal process has greatly improved photocatalytic performance in the degradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals in visible light. Characterization results reveal that the as-prepared samples exhibit narrowed bandgap and lower recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, allow effective visible light harvesting and improve performance in the photocatalytic degradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals. In addition, the band structures of the samples and degradation mechanisms of the EDCs are studied and postulated, elucidating that superoxide radicals are the main active species involved in the degradation process of EDCs by the photocatalysts.
