Summary:
Metamaterials represent a major type of artificially engineered materials with unprecedented material properties in varied engineer domains, including electromagnetics, acoustics, mechanics, and thermal dynamics. In this talk, I will introduce the fundamentals of metamaterials, approaches to integrate microelectromechanical systems (MEMS or microsystems) with metamaterials, functional metamaterial devices from the synergy, and outlooks for metamaterial-enabled devices. Specifically, I will introduce our progress on using MEMS to manipulate the modality of electromagnetic wave propagation, radio frequency metamaterials to enhance the inductive wireless energy harvesting efficiency and magnetic resonance imaging quality, and acoustic metamaterials developed to manipulate the sound waves and reduce noise by an ultra-open geometry.
