Summary:
Magnetic Qualification Challenges of Vacuum Pumps for use in Fusion Reactors The ITER project has the goal to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion and to advance the scientific and engineering understanding of fusion for future commercial reactors. The vacuum systems that are under development for the tokamak and supporting systems are expected to be dominated by one-of-a-kind devices due to their scale and varying operating environments. ITER will include one of the largest and most complex high vacuum systems ever built. Reliable vacuum is key to the success of the ITER project. Since fusion power plants are just in the early stages of commercialization, pre-qualified components for this unique application including operation in high magnetic fields are not commercially available.
