Dr. Cristian Koepfli is a molecular and genomic epidemiologist based at the University of Notre Dame. He holds a PhD from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, followed by research stays at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Australia and at the University of California Irvine. His research focuses on the development of novel diagnostic methods, and molecular and genomic tools for the control of infectious diseases, in particular malaria. Specific projects center on novel rapid tests and AI-supported automated microscopy for malaria diagnosis, describing the extent of the asymptomatic reservoir, genomic surveillance of parasite populations, and understanding the impact of vector control intervention. He applies his methods in large population-based studies through close collaborations with research institutes in Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Burundi.
