Summary:
To promote decarbonization in EAF steelmaking, the University of Minnesota Natural Resources Research Institute (UMN NRRI) has developed innovative engineered biocarbon materials to replace fossil coal-based injection carbon at the EAF. UMN NRRI has developed a patent-pending novel method for optimizing biocarbon materials for use as injection carbon at the EAF. A comprehensive review of the performance of the engineered biocarbon materials as a replacement for fossil coal-based injection carbon will be presented. Implementation of this technology would provide EAF steelmakers with a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil coal usage at the EAF.
