Summary:
The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources and the need for a resilient and efficient grid have driven the demand for large-scale energy storage systems (ESS). However, the safety and reliability of these systems are critical concerns that must be addressed to ensure the stability and security of the grid. This paper presents an overview of the safety and reliability challenges associated with large-scale ESS, including thermal management, electrical safety, and cybersecurity. We discuss the current state of the art in safety and reliability testing, certification, and standards for ESS, and highlight the need for more advanced and comprehensive approaches to ensure the safe and reliable operation of these systems. We also present case studies of large-scale ESS deployments and discuss the lessons learned from these experiences.
