Summary:

Many buildings in North America were constructed before modern energy policies were established, making it essential to assess the thermal performance of building envelopes to identify retrofit opportunities in the existing building stock. This presentation will introduce a method using infrared thermography (IRT) to estimate the effective thermal transmission properties of opaque building envelopes. In addition to qualitative and quantitative thermal assessments, a novel Relative Quantitative Infrared Index (IRI) will be presented to enable quick evaluation and ranking of building envelope thermal performance. The use of the IRI will be demonstrated through a non-proprietary, web-based software. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of IRT, IRI, and how these tools can help building owners, managers, and consultants more effectively assess and prioritize exterior building envelope retrofit projects.
