Dr. Zhiqiang Cao received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington in 2011. From 2011 to 2012, he was a research fellow at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Department of Anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In January 2013, Dr. Cao joined the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Wayne State University, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in April 2017 and to full Professor in 2021. Dr. Cao’s lab at Wayne State University adopts a multidisciplinary approach to address critical medical challenges, with a focus on diabetes treatment and management. His research has made significant strides in islet encapsulation and transplantation, glucose-responsive insulin, oral insulin delivery, and improving subcutaneous insulin infusion. This body of work has been supported by funding from the NIH, NSF, Breakthrough T1D at US and UK (formerly JDRF), and regional Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization Funding.
