Summary:
Energy storage is expected to play a large role in future power systems, especially with higher variable renewable energy deployment and increasing decarbonization targets. A wide variety of longer-duration, larger-scale (bulk) energy storage technologies are in development and are currently being testing in the field. There is growing interest in better understanding how these developing technologies operate and perform in more real-world settings. This study was commissioned by EPRI to review the operation of the newly built full commercial scale energy storage system located in Sardinia, Italy. This presentation will provide an analysis of the system performance as tested and witnessed by EPRI, covering measured data, lessons learned, and operating procedures of the system.
