Summary:

SMRs are poised to be a game changer in the next few years. Small Modular Reactors (aka- SMRs) will allow for the rapid deployment of zero carbon power generation to meet the growing demand for power nationally. The Idaho National Labs, in partnership with industry partners, including Rock Energy Storage, are developing a thermal energy test bed (project name TRIUMPH), to accelerate the technical readiness of SMRs integration with complimentary thermal energy technologies, including Thermal Energy Storage (TES). SMR integration with TES is ideally suited for facilities requiring power & thermal/steam, with the key benefit of using off-peak power to help balance total energy loads. The TRIUMPH project, "Testbed for Resilient IndUstrial and Manufacturing users of Power and Heat", will integrate several thermal solutions including thermal energy storage (TES), electrotechnologies, high-temperature heat pumps, as well as advanced control and industrial load flexibility modeling, into a comprehensive testbed for resilient industrial and manufacturing applications.
