Petroleum & Gas Refining:  
Moving Toward Net-Negative Carbon Systems



Global anthropogenic carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions have reached alarming concentrations, accelerating threats to our planet and human society, including climate change. United States inventories estimate that fuel combustion in the transportation, electricity, and industry sectors contributes nearly three-quarters of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These CO2eq emissions continue to rise in the most recent inventories. More importantly, the most pessimistic projections indicate that we will exceed GHG emission levels that could prevent us from reversing the effects of global warming unless we achieve net-zero—and ideally, net-negative—carbon emissions through sustainable technologies.

In response to these climate and security challenges, the Biorefining, Petroleum, and Gas Refining Symposium will focus on applied research from refineries and early-stage innovations from universities, labs, and startups in the following topics and application areas:
